Plantation columns and blankets of snow are not often heard in the same sentence uttered in the Deep South. If a southerner sees snow at home during his lifetime it is as rare as, well snow in the South land. And actual accumulation is even rarer. The recent snow storm that swept across the Lower South (or Gulf Coast) lived up to prediction. Around noon last Friday, it was evident that this would be an extraordinary event, so I grabbed the camera, ... Read More

SP has been on an extended stay in New York City after a sweet country Christmas down South. I have a complicated relationship with the big city that's been going on for a while now. I've lived in NYC on and off for a few years, and am alternately attracted and repelled by the crazy energy and constant amusement it provides to citizens and visitors alike. But this trip was a new and eye-opening experience. I have never been around during that ... Read More

You’ve all heard SP wax on about tailgating, the smell of good Kentucky Bourbon, and the sis boom bah of a rocking stadium. SP loves a college football game. And always wooden ones, if I have the choice. There are many places in America where the sailing is splendid, but there is one place that is near and dear to SP’s heart. That place is Cape Cod and in particular, Provincetown Harbor at the tip ... Read More

With this post SP begins a new feature here on the site. SP Road Trips will highlight favorite places. (The original title was SP Roadie, but that was deemed a bridge too far.)
SP has been on sabbatical on the East Coast during these waning days of the summer of Aught-Nine. Business has called me East, so please don’t think this is some dilettante’s holiday. Well, truthfully, there has been a healthy mix of business ... Read More
