Ahoy! The boom crosses the centerline of the boat during tacking as well as jibing -- not sure that is clear above. Frequently a downwind sail will see the jib lowered or furled and a spinnaker or chute set -- which can be very difficult for beginners. A strong sunblock is essential.

Best wishes,

SP,

Although I am an avid reader and fan, I must point out a most egregious error on your part in your latest missive on yacht party rules. Under no circumstances should anyone offer a cash tip to anyone at a yacht club (see comments on the launch). In fact, it is considered highly offensive for any cash to be seen at any time at a yacht club. Other than this minor error, please keep up your noble work.

Signed,
Anonymous

Dear Anonymous,
Thank you for your readership and your correction. I have amended the rule to specify "public marinas." I attempt not to be too exclusive on the site, but your point is well-taken on the subject of tipping the staff at private clubs.

Cordially,
SP

Well said.

I'd add that if the yacht is on a mooring, and the captain is already aboard, it's nice to make a last-minute offer to bring anything that might be needed aboard. Ice is always appreciated, and usually available near the dock.

Also, there are lot's of moving parts on boats, and you might be tempted to fiddle with some of them (bells, winches, spare lines, life lines). Please don't. It will annoy the captain extremely, and etiquette won't preclude her from telling you so.
