Every man needs a great summer jacket that can stand the heat and still look sharp. This Silk and Linen Sport Coat hits all the right notes and it is on great sale now that the summer is full upon us. The great thing about classic dressing is that this jacket will never go out of style May to September. Put it away when the weather turns and pull it back out next May. And you find it here at half the price. Pretty nice deal for the classic dressers. This jacket is a great wardrobe staple that will last forever, if properly cared for.
You can wear this sport coat to work with Khakis or jeans. Or on the weekend go extra preppy with embroidered pants, hell even shorts. You’ll always look fresh and crisp and you won’t melt in the heat.
Rule to remember: Tailoring. Even if a shop stocks your size, ask to see the tailor. Or if you buy on-line take it to your dry cleaner for tailoring. The jacket sleeve length should hit at the hinge of your wrist. And if need be, have them narrow the sleeve. It’s worth it to make the fit right. That ‘s the great thing about classic clothes on sale, spend a little more on tailoring and it will look bespoke.
SP is getting back to recommending great finds at great prices. Look for them here every so often. And yes, Brooks Brothers is our first sponsor, but that does not detract from the fact that this is one great classic at a very good price.

The so-called Northeastern Business World, by allowing business casual most of the time, has really forfeited the right to object to a seersucker suit. I think they can be worn on truly hot days by someone who is typically dressed in summer weight worsted. When Florida was little more than a swamp, professionals in New York were wearing seersucker. So-called tropical worsteds are too dense for the hottest days. Making seersucker suits with a full lining may improve the drape, but doesn’t that defeat the purpose of staying cool, Mr. Brooks, Mr. Press?

Best with two tone spectator shoes or even Bass weejuns (brown with black polish applied and highly spit shined.) Brooks Brothers vintage three button front with patch pockets and welted edges. Never wear a striped tie with one.
Old vaudeville joke: “I buy my seersucker at Cox’s and…well, nevermind.”

Speaking as a lawyer who has lived in Boston, New York, and Miami, I think a seersucker suit looks fine in Florida in the summertime for any occasion, social or business, where a suit is called for. In the Northeast I think a seersucker suit is OK for weekend social occasions in the summer that call for a suit, but it doesn’t look quite serious enough for the most serious business occasions, where a poplin suit might look better.
Dear John,
Point well taken. As with everything, situations must be considered. Know the water before diving in. SP leans toward the dandy side of life and almost has a punk approach to dressing: if it’s too classic throw a little curve. If it’s too casual, stiffen up. But never endanger your reputation or your impression upon those you need to placate to get ahead.

^Thanks! I will tell the hubs you approve. He loves seersucker, and I love a man in seersucker!

SP, What is your take on seersucker–cheesy or classic? To me, nothing says Southern like seersucker, but I wonder if a full-on suit is a little too much. B
Dear B,
Seersucker! Embrace it. White shirt, colorful tie, white bucks or better yet, brown and white saddle oxfords. Wear it with pride and stay cool. That’s what this fabric is made for.
