This post is terrific, and should be required reading for university-age boyfriends visiting their girlfriends’ parents homes.

Though I consider myself fairly polished, I learned a few points here. Thanks for writing.

I feel strongly Rule 7 should be that one writes a thoughtful bread and butter letter - and not an email. I once had someone stay for more than two weeks, not a word of thanks while here or later.

Excellent post! Totally agree with “Blushing” on the letter. Actually, one should plan for their departure as well as their arrival and bring a note card with them specifically for the purpose of leaving a handwritten note with the gift in your room on departure.

And, an expanded “don’t act like a guest” could be number eight. This includes picking up after yourself (don’t leave personal items in public areas) and leaving the bathroom neat throughout your stay (if it is in a public area and not a part of your private suite). In general, not being more trouble than you are worth. I know of one guest who insists on a fresh towel and wash cloth for every shower. I say, “hang and reuse.” Just as with our environment, your stay should have “minimum impact.”
