Who knows where and when it all began, but the one thing for sure is that the scruffy, scraggly facial appendage known as the Goatee is certainly still with us. The fad must have hit its zenith in the nineties, but there are still men running around sporting this look like goats scrambling on a craggy cliff. When New Mexico Governor Bill Richardson showed up on the campaign trail with a tuft of grass sprouting from his chin his credibility evaporated, as did his hope of becoming Secretary of State. In addition to being detrimental to one’s personal presentation, apparently this unattractive hair statement can damage one’s career as well.
I can’t think of one man this style looks good on. Trim and neat or wild and woolly, this style has no place on the well-groomed man’s face. Yes, there have been questionable trends in facial hair throughout history — the handle-bar moustache comes immediately to mind – and in fact seems to be making a comeback around certain quarters. These trends are better left alone.
No man needs to make a fashion statement with his face. Men should be handsome, clean, groomed and ready to face the world and its challenges. If one chooses to sport a mustache, make it neat, trim and clean. Not so trim or neat that you recall a certain Adolf, mind you, but neat and trim is a must. The same should be said for a beard. No one wants to imagine that there might be creatures living in the shrub on your face. The trend of the groomed five o’clock shadow is not even worth belaboring. It has no place after the weekend and should never be seen on a man in a suit. And old friend in New Orleans reminds, “You should always look your best when you leave your house. You never know when you’re going to meet your destiny. “ SP couldn’t agree more.
